Four is a charm:
Flaming Moose wins the 2009 Murphy's Quiznight Championships
Oct. 3, 2009. Held in the Silverdome in Zoetermeer, 226 teams couldn't stop
FM from winning their fourth major and 7th (inter)national quiz tournament. With
three points to spare it looks easier than it was. Our strongest opponents were
leading up until the last round, in which we managed to overcome a two point
deficit to claim another big quiz title.
After a painful and humiliating result in last year's final we decided we needed
to shift gears. Biggest difference was that we played with five members again in
stead of a faithless three. This time Mandy, from competing team "Filthy
Gorgeous" in our home bar's weekly quiznights and Ramon, a member of succesfull
Flaming Moose teams in the 'ministry of VWS'- music and movie quizzes joined us
to do what we thought was impossible: bounce back from mediocracy. This proves
what we always thought: you can't win finals with three men. Even though we
regularly win our home quizzes with just the core of three (and once in a while
even a two-men Moose can pull it off), to win a big final like this one you need
at least a girl on board and preferably one more player who can bring in some
'niche'-knowledge.
Another fact is proven once more: the harder the cicumstances are, the better we
perform. In a transparant situation like this, with very limited time to think
and the impossibility to cheat only the best teams have a chance to win. This
year it was Flaming Moose to take home a hiddeously big trophy which we donated
to owner John of our very own O'Casey's bar in The Hague - only to find it
hidden somewhere out of sight a mere week after leaving it there... :-)

Update: here's

Flaming Moose win their 3rd Murphy's
Dutch Open, or 1st NK Quiz Championships
Nov. 18, 2007 - Da Moose is back - In style! With the -renamed- Dutch Open
being held in O'Shea's Pub in Vlaardingen, Flaming Moose was back on familiar
territory. We managed to win or 3rd Dutch Open (or first NK Quiz
championships depending how you look at it) in a dominant way. All of the
previous ones we won in that nice bar as well, so it almost looks like we *own*
that 'moose-friendly' place. With a strong line up (Jennifer, BJ, Vince, Kees
and Chris, specially flown in from Dubai) we completely dominated the place, of
which TOFKOP and the Shagadelics were our familiar strongest opponents. This
time these ´usual suspects´ just weren´t capable of staying close enough
to make it a nail biter for us. Flaming Moose scored 96 points, a difference of
15 points with the runners-up, which is a team record for any of the six "big
ones" we won.
The weekend started out real nice for us, with Flaming Moose
winning the Ministry of VWS annual Movie Quiz on Thursday in the very first time
we competed in that quiz. This year both VWS-quizzes had FM as winners, because
in April we won the annual Music Quiz there as well for the first time in the
team's history. This weekend we were rightiously Holland's very own 'Quiz
Cannibals' because our regular weekly quiz in O'Casey's was also our pray.
With Sunday's victory Flaming Moose kept a perfect score, for we
won at least one of the two big finals every year since 2003. In any of those
years our name is in the books, something we're pretty proud of to say the
least.

Flaming Moose 2nd in the '06 Murphy's Dutch Open
Nov. 19, 2006 - You can't win 'em all... Rotterdam was a bridge too far for
Flaming Moose in this year's Murphy's Dutch Open. As the defending title holders
and reigning Quiznight champions we tried to win our third Dutch Open. But this
time we had to bow for "The Shagadelics" from Rotterdam who managed to win their
2nd big one by beating us with only a one point difference. We congratulate this
team which has always been good for a top-10 spot in any of the past finals.
As for us... Well, after drinking away our sour loss we're doing much better now, thank
you. We did learn some lessons, though. Like, never change a correct answer
before you hand in the answer sheet. Doing that won't help you win, believe us. Also: make
sure you know all of the Oscar-winners of at least the past ten years. And
while at that, you might as well get into a bunch of other stuff that could come
in usefull in quizzing.
Although not as big as the first prize winners' trophee, we do have another
token to lock away in our home bar's prize cabinet. And *that* is always a good thing.
Flaming Moose wins the 2005-2006 Murphy's Quiznight Final!
March 12, 2006
- Two hundred teams, a thousand players, 120 questions and only 6
working bathrooms. Flaming Moose wasn't intimidated and once again took Vlaardingen in a
glorious style.
On the 11th of March, 2006 the Moose won the (renamed) Murphy's Quiznight Final for the
third time. This year, a staggering 200 teams, competed during a five hour quiz
showdown.
With only a one point margin over Enschede team 'Ome Henk & Tante Ria' we
managed to win with a (what at first looked disappointing) 63% correct answer
rate. Did somebody say the quiz wasn't easy this year? As usual, our nemesis and friends
of Hawkeye Canoe ended up in the top 4 of the ranking which makes
O'Casey's once again the bar with the
strongest contenders in the league.
The grand prize was a travel check of 2500 Euros for the team and a Beertender
plus a keg of Murphy's Irish Red. Our favorite bar in The Hague welcomed us home with a bottle
of good old Jameson. Cheers! We'd like to thank the
organization and
the sponsor of this truly
great event for these handsome prizes.
